Early childhood in Croissy. Studied at the Lycée de Versailles. Travelled in Europe and as far as Egypt, where he attended the inauguration of the Suez Canal. Back in Paris, he passed his law exams and was called to the bar in 1870. Poetry attracted him more than procedure, and he published his first verses under the pseudonym Jean Rebel. A play was successful. Until 1874, he served in the army and after an accident, he decided to devote his life to revenge on Germany through his pen and political action. He founded the Ligue des Patriotes, which he ran until his death. In 1889, he became a Member of Parliament. Autograph letter signed Croissy-Chatou, Dimanche soir, "...
