He returned to Nice in 1848 with his red shirts, which ended with the defeat of Piedmont. He then went to Rome to defend the Pope, and suffered another defeat. He fled to North Africa and then to the United States. On his return in 1854, he bought the island of Caprera. In 1866, he again took part in the Third Italian War of Independence against Austria. Finally, after Sedan, he took part in the fight against the German invasion, before retiring to his island.
