He learned to sail from the age of twelve with his uncle on Le Raisonable. In 1779 he was appointed Captain. After serving in America, he joined Admiral Hood in the Mediterranean. He lost an eye at the Siege of Calvi and was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar. Autograph manuscript written with the left hand s.l.n.d. 3/4 p. in-4°. The lower part is occupied by a certificate of authenticity from Admiral Nelson's niece. Slight weakness in the folds carefully reinforced on the reverse. Very rare. Order from Nelson to his fleet, concerning the French squadron of Toulon: "The Seahorse and Niger to watch the motions of the French fleet in Toulon occasionally going to Rend; in order to acquaint any ships that I am gone to Rend n° 97 at which rend. I shall be to found or intell'ce where I may be gone to. When the A... joins from Porto..(?).. to desire (?) captain Mowbray to join me as soon as possible as also the Amazon daily expected from Malta…”.
