A volunteer in 1791, he campaigned in the armies of the Republic. He distinguished himself in the campaigns of the Empire and was wounded several times. He joined the Guards in 1809 and was made a general in 1813. At the end of the battle of Waterloo, he was severely wounded and taken prisoner, having responded to English summonses with the apostrophe that made him famous :"Merde ! La garde meurt, mais ne se rend pas". Document signed "Cambronne" as captain in the 47th half line infantry brigade. Document signed, also by General Baraguay d'Hilliers (1764-1813), and by the future General Lanchantin (1756-disappeared in Russia, 1812) and the members of the Board of Directors of the unit.
