A lawyer, he was elected deputy for the Jura in 1848 and vice-president of the Assembly the following year. After the coup d'état of 02.12.1851, he returned to the bar. In 1868, he was re-elected as a deputy and in 1871 he was President of the National Assembly. He was President of the Republic from 1879 to 1887.
