František KUPKA (1871 - 1957) Tanagra Dancer Oil on canvas, signed and dedicated to Ninie ...es 20 years towards the bottom right, with a handwritten label on the back with the title of the work. 55 x 46 cm (restorations) Provenance : - Artist's studio - Given by Kupka to André Durst (son of Auguste Durst) - By descent to current owner Ninie is the nickname of Eugénie Straub (1879 - 1963), the artist's second wife, whom he met in 1904 and married in 1910. The dedication Ninie ...[l]es 20 ans probably corresponds either to the 20th anniversary of their meeting (1904 - 1924) or to the 20th anniversary of their marriage (1910 - 1930). In 1896, Kupka moved to 83, boulevard de Clichy. His first companion, Maria Bruhn, joined him in Paris in 1897 and they settled in La Bretèche. Maria died in 1898, and the inheritance she left Kupka enabled him to rent a studio at 10, rue Fromentin. In 1899, Kupka rented a studio at 84, boulevard de Rochechouart until 1902, when he moved to 57 rue Caulaincourt. In 1904, he met his future wife Eugenie Straub, wife of an Alsatian officer and mother of a three-year-old daughter, Andrée. In 1906 he moved again, settling with Eugenie Staub and her daughter at 7, rue Lemaître in Puteaux, in a studio house where his neighbors were Jacques Villon and his brother Raymond Duchamp Villon. On March 15, 1910, he marries Eugenie Straub. From July 15, 1929... Kupka rents a studio on the same street at 137, rue Lemaître. He rents this studio to the painter Auguste Durst (1842 - 1930). Kupka kept this studio until his death in 1957. The fact that Kupka took over his painting after its initial creation, either in 1924 or 1930, explains the slightly truncated signature and dedication. slightly truncated signature and dedication. We would like to thank Pierre Brullé, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and told us that this painting must probably have been painted at two different times, and that the writing on the label with the title is probably in Eugénie's hand. A certificate from Pierre Brullé dated April 11, 2024 will be given to the buyer.
