Honoré de Balzac, La Peau de chagrin - Social studies.
Paris, Delloye et Lecou, 1838. In-8, [4]-402-[1]p.
First illustrated edition, first print run, published in 25 issues from December 22, 1837, then in volume on July 21, 1838. The work is illustrated with 101 vignettes, including one on the title, by Baron, Janet-Lange, Gavarni, Français, Marckl engraved on steel by Brunellière, Nargeot, Langlois, etc. Our copy contains the features of the first edition, such as the famous skeleton vignette in the title. However, the vignette of the gardener is on p.303 and not 301. This error was corrected during the printing run (Carteret reports a copy in delivery with the vignette correctly positioned).
Occasionally, some copies have chine prints of Pauline and Foedora (p.149 and 287). They were not intended for this edition, but for Les Femmes de Balzac (they were sold as extras). They are therefore not present (and not missing).
This work sold poorly and was the only illustrated edition of Etudes sociales.
Green half-chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt bindings. Scattered foxing. First inner hinge a little weak (endpaper split in the fold).
