18th century French school, entourage of Jean-Baptiste SANTERRE
Portrait of Philippe d'Orléans, Regent of France
Oil on canvas (oval, foxed, restorations)
In an antique carved and gilded wood frame (accident)
Philippe II, Duc d'Orléans, was the son of Monsieur, brother of King Louis XIV, and Elisabeth Charlotte of Bavaria, known as Princess Palatine. He was appointed Regent of France on the death of his uncle in 1715, and held power until the young Louis XV came of age on February 15, 1723. He died in Paris in December of the same year.
Our painting is a bust version of the portrait of Philippe d'Orléans by Santerre in the Prado Museum (Inv. P002344).
