Antimenes Painter, Ca. 530 - 510 BC. A large black-figure pottery neck-amphora, attributed to the Antimenes Painter, who worked from around 530 to 510 BC. It is associated with the famous Leagros Group, representing the late phase of Attic black-figure painting. On side A, the vase depicts a festive scene centred around Dionysos, the god of wine. Dionysos is shown calmly holding his drinking cup (kantharos), surrounded by dancing companions, including a satyr and a maenad. On side B, two centaurs face opposite directions. They hold long branches and a drinking cup, both sporting long red beards and distinctive hairstyles. This piece is of exceptionally high quality and comes with an authentication certificate from CIRAM laboratory France, including a TL-test. Item comes with a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists. Size: 365mm x 245mm; Weight: 2.57kg Provenance: Property of a London Ancient Art gallery; formerly NYC collection, F.A.; acquired before 2000 on the US art market. Thermoluminescence certificate from CIRAM included dating this vase to 377 BC with a +/- curve of 250 years.
