Supposed saber (after Michel Petard tome 1er. Des sabres et des épées page 124 reference 115 U) from the mounted company of the Directoire Guard or Gendarmerie (1798-99). Cast bronze mounting, round cap with long tail, strong symmetrical openwork shell like the plate, flat main guard limb stamped "VERSAILLES", wooden spindle dressed in chagrin and filigree, curved blade with flat back, groove and gutter in the center of the blade (different shape from the example described by Michel Petard), total length 1015 mm. In its sheet steel scabbard with numerous brass fittings (clevis and bracelets bearing pitons and rings, long steel stinger bolt joining the bracelets by two brass splints running along the edge of the scabbard, stiffened by bracelets, this type of scabbard is more reminiscent of a gendarmerie saber)(Condition 1).
