A Russian week icon "Shestodnev" (The six days of Creation), 19th century
Wooden panel with two sponki on the reverse. Kovcheg, tempera on chalk ground. The six days of the week are depicted in two rows in the upper panel: Christ's Descent into Hades (Sunday), the Synaxis of the Angels (Monday), the Beheading of John the Baptist (Tuesday), the Annunciation (Wednesday), the Last Supper (Thursday) and the Crucifixion (Friday). In the center of the second register, Christ appears in front of a double aureole surrounded by Mary and John (Deesis). Saints, church fathers, martyrs, prophets and apostles are lined up in the lower section. In the center are children accompanied by an angel. Saturday - the feast day of all saints - is represented by the saints in the lower section. Tear and loss in the lower area, retouching. Dimensions 31 x 27 x 3 cm.
