An early Byzantine oil lamp, 5th - 7th century
Cylindrical body, turned on a lathe. Centering hole on the underside, turning grooves on the base and wall. Top side set off inwards with rim strips around the outer edge, wick hole and oil hole. The latter closed by a lid with hinge and pin for lifting. Three eyelets on the rim for a three-legged wire hanger. Joined at the top by a ring, with a hook above. Dark patina, under which the partly metallic background shimmers through. Length when suspended 17.3 cm. Width 6.4 cm.
Provenance: Frankfurt private collection. Acquired at Hermann Historica in April 2016 (auction 72, lot 4625). Previously South German private collection, acquired in the 1990s in the art trade.
