A Greek silver phiale with a high rim, 5th - 4th century B.C.
Profusely ornamented phial. The retracted bottom with star pattern between two rows of small circle punch marks, from which tongue-shaped ribs extend, with offset rim reaching just above the curve, surmounted from bottom to top by two Lesbian cymatia, two complementary undulating tendrils with leaves in wave troughs and crests as well as a swastika meander pattern, each segment separated by a row of circle punch marks. Dark-grey patina. Isolated, minor warps and minimal cracks on the bulgy body that, however, hardly affect the overall image. Height 13.3 cm, diameter of the rim 15.8 cm.
Provenance: Frankfurt private collection. Acquired in April 2016 from Hermann Historica (auction 72, lot 4556). Previously an Austrian private collection, acquired in the Vienna art trade in the 1980s.
