A shako for French cavalry officer
Cap body in red cloth, black oil cloth top, cap band of black leather with semi-circular leather covering at rear, top trimmed in gilt-metallic tape, hand-applied. Chin scales of interwoven gilt-metal links on brown leather backing, secured by three gilt-finished lion-head metal hooks, one at each side and one at back. Red, white and blue metallic fabric rosette cockade applied to front, red cloth pompom with gilt numeral "1" with four gilt cords attached to cockade by gilt metal button with flaming grenade motif. Black leather visor, edge trimmed in gilt metal, smooth black underside. Black leather suspension liner with perforations for tie straps and black leather chinstrap. Size circa 53 cm.
