Statue of Pallas Athena
Bronze, patinated in nuanced dark, green to brown tones. Probably cast in the 19th century as a Grand Tour object. Fully sculpted depiction of the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategy, battle and the arts in armor with helmet, holding a shield with the head of Medusa in relief. Reduced version after the famous, large Renaissance bronze on the Loggetta at the foot of the bell tower on St. Mark's Square in Venice, built and decorated with figures in 1538-1546 by the architect and sculptor Jacopo Sansovino. H. 73.5 cm.
