Tyrolean carver (active around 1730)
Mary with child as a nativity figure
Carved wood, polychrome painted and gilded. Fully sculpted group with the young, devoutly praying, kneeling Mother of God, in front of her the unclothed child lying on straw and a cushion. Rare, early, sculpturally high-quality Baroque nativity figure. The first crib was set up in the Jesuit church in Innsbruck in 1608, marking the beginning of the crib tradition in Tyrol, which continues to this day and reached its peak in the 18th century with dressed cribs. In contrast to most nativity figures, which were mainly set up in churches and monasteries, with wax or wooden heads and often splendid textile garments, the present sculpture is completely carved and not separately clothed. H. 38 cm.
Austrian sculptor active circa 1730 in Tyrol. Rare, carved, painted and gilt wood sculpture of Madonna and child from a crib.
