Saint Gregory the Great Oil on copper 24x19 cm - with frame 38x32 cm This delightful copper replicates the detail depicting Saint Gregory the Great from the large altarpiece, undisputed masterpiece by Carlo Maratti from 1686, depicting the Immaculate Conception kept in the Cybo Chapel of Santa Maria del Popolo . The only substantial difference, compared to the altarpiece, is the position of the dove. This iconography will be taken up by Antonio Balestra for the altarpiece of the main altar of San Gregorio al Celio.
