Thomas Wijck (attributed to)
(Beverwijk 1616-Haarlem 1677)
Pair of rural landscapes with shepherds Oil on panel 54x41 cm - framed cm This pair of paintings fits perfectly into the pictorial production of the Dutchman Thomas Wijck. Having trained in Italy, between Rome and Naples, he had the opportunity to come into contact with the lively painting of the Bamboccianti, of which Michelangelo Cerquozzi and Peter van Laer were among the greatest experts. The two paintings can be ascribed to the mature phase of Wijk's career, when he had now returned to reside permanently in Haarlem, for the precise but material treatment of the landscape and the characters that animate the scene. Reminiscent of the Roman period remains the temple and the classical ruins present.
