19th century Russian iconographer The Virgin of All Sorrows egg tempera on wood 35x30 cm In the center the Virgin and Child flanked by people afflicted by illnesses and pain. Above, angels turn toward the sick, as if they were addressing them the inscribed prayers. The Virgin of Sorrows is a type of Marian iconography venerated in the Russian Orthodox Church and is considered miraculous. The canon appeared in 1688 in Moscow in the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as the Church of the Transfiguration, although other earlier versions are known, but with different iconography. The final typology of the icon was formed in Russia under strong Western influence. Analogies can be perceived with the iconography of Mercy, the Immaculate Conception or Majesty.
