Rare papier-mâché tabatiere with apotheosis on the birth of Henri de Bourbon-Artois, Duc de Bordeaux, Comte de Chambord (1820-1883), later King Henry V of France
Cylindrical body. The top and bottom of the lid set in a gilded metal ring. The lid with a glazed, partly colored engraving in stipple technique depicting a child lying on a pouf, carried by clouds. Above a crowned coat of arms with banner and inscription "HENRY DIEUXDONNÉ DUC DE BORDEAUX". The wall surrounded by an embossed decorative band with vine decoration. Pink box interior. H. 2 cm. D. 6.8 cm.
Provenance: from the important collection of the Frankfurt banking family von Bethmann, which has grown over generations.
