(2,53 g) Very rare type. Superb. JEAN V duc de Bretagne, known as Jean le Sage, was born on December 24, 1389 at the Château de l'Hermine in Vannes. He was the first son and third child of Duke Jean IV and his third wife Jeanne de Navarre. On his father's death on November 9, 1399, he became Duke of Brittany at the age of 10. He died on August 29, 1442, at the manor house of La Touche, near Nantes, owned by Bishop Jean de Malestroit. In 1202, the Duchess of Brittany Alix married Duke Pierre de Dreux. In those days, only the eldest child could keep the family coat of arms; other children had to "break the arms", i.e. add a distinctive mark. Pierre de Dreux added an ermine spot to the family coat of arms. This is how the ermine made its appearance in Brittany. During a hunt, the Duchess Anne de Bretagne saw an ermine being stalked by hounds, preferring to die rather than get dirty by crossing a muddy pond. Fascinated, the duchess let it live and made the ermine her emblem. "Kentoc'h mervel eget bezan saotret". The ermine is to the Duke of Brittany what the fleur-de-lis is to the King of France: two symbols of purity.
