"Southern Germany (probably Augsburg), circa 1600, after a model by Gublielmo della Porta (1515-1577). Pieta. Gilt bronze and chased plaque H. 18 x L. 12.5 cm. Minor wear. Expert: cabinet Lacroix-Jeannest. This beautiful finely chased gilt bronze plaque depicts the Virgin of Pity before Jerusalem. The subject derives from a model by the famous Italian artist Guglielmo della Porta (1515-1577), designed around 1570, which went on to become a resounding success and is considered "probably the most famous sacred image in Europe around 1600". Not only did it influence El Greco, but it also spread to the edition of Baisers de Paix, plates, and then, via engraving, to all other types of material. Until recently, this composition was attributed to one of Guglielmo della Porta's most famous assistants, the Flemish artist Jacob Cornelisz Cobaert (1535- 1615). The very similar example (albeit with minor variations) in the National Gallery of Art in Washington is now considered to be a German (Augsburg?) production of the late 16th century.
