REDOUTÉ (Pierre-Joseph). Roses painted by P. J. Redouté [...], described by C. A. Thorry. Paris, Panckoucke, 1824.
2 large volumes in-8, half havane calf, ornate smooth spines (period binding with label of bookbinder Larroux in Bordeaux).
First octavo edition of Raphaël des fleurs' masterpiece, published in 40 monthly issues.
It is illustrated with 160 plates engraved and stencilled under Redouté's direction, each accompanied by one to three leaves of descriptive text. The drawings were re-engraved and reduced from folio to octavo format.
With the rare 4-page prospectus: "The brilliance, truth, elegance and typographic luxury of Mr. Redouté's Roses have made them popular throughout Europe. In the portraits he has given of all the varieties of the rose, nature itself has been recognized...".
A fine copy. Slight spotting.
