PATTE (Pierre). Monumens érigés en France à la gloire de Louis XV [...] et suivis d'un choix des principaux Projets qui ont été proposés, pour placer la statue du Roi dans les différens quartiers de Paris. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, 1765.
Large folio, red morocco, richly decorated ribbed spine, triple gilded fillet framing the boards with gilded numeral in spandrels and gilded coat of arms in the center, double gilded fillet on the edges, inner gilded roulette, gilded edges (period binding).
First edition illustrated with a title vignette, 4 other chapter-head vignettes engraved by Cochin, Marvye and Patte, and 57 large, handsome hors-texte plates, 24 of which are folded once or several times, engraved by Patte, Le Mire, Loyer, Bouchardon, Constant, Lemoine, Guibal, Pigalle, Boffrand and Cochin, illustrating monuments or reproducing projects for Paris, Bordeaux, Valenciennes, Rennes, Nancy, Reims and Rouen.
The author's most famous work. An architect better known for his articles in the Encyclopédie, his fierce attacks on Soufflot, who built the Panthéon, and his writings in general, than for his architectural achievements, Pierre Patte was the architect of the Duc de Deux-Ponts, for whom he built two palaces, including that of Jaresbourg; he also built the Hôtel Charost in Paris.
A precious copy in contemporary morocco with the coat of arms and cipher of LOUIS XV. O.H.R. pl. 2495, irons n° 15 & 29.
