CORMENIN (Louis Marie de La Haye, vicomte de). Personal archives. Louis Marie de La Haye de Cormenin was born in Paris in 1788, to an old Bresse family who had settled in the Orléans region. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1808 and joined the Conseil d'Etat in 1810, becoming first auditor, then maître des requêtes. A supporter of the Second Restoration, he made a name for himself with the publication of several works on administrative law, which earned him a high reputation as a jurisconsult. From 1828 onwards, he embarked on a political career, being elected deputy for Loiret and then for Yonne. Under the July Monarchy, he invariably voted against the government and wrote numerous pamphlets, notably contributing to the reduction of the King's civil list. He was also in favor of universal suffrage. Elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1848, he voted for the banishment of the Orléans family, and subsequently rallied to the Second Empire, becoming a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1855. He died in Paris in 1868. The present set includes 54 handwritten documents on his family: Joseph de La Haye (1690-1783), King's Secretary at the Parliament of Pau; Pierre Joseph de La Haye, Lieutenant General of the Admiralty of France and President of the Bureau des droits maritimes (1721-1814); Marie François Joseph de La Haye de Cormenin, Lieutenant General of the Admiralty then Master of the Chambre des comptes (1752-1821) and Louis Marie de La Haye, Viscount de Cormenin, jurisconsult, man of letters and politician (1788-1868). The documents mainly concern the acquisition or transfer of offices, after-death inventories, inheritance deeds and marriage contracts, as well as documents concerning decorations and orders of knighthood. An engraved portrait of Louis Marie de Cormenin, a printed brochure (1789) and 5 photographs of his son Louis (1821-1866), former director of the Moniteur officiel under the Second Empire, including two by Disderi, are included.
