Hagar driven from Abraham's house
Canvas.
52.5 x 67 cm.
The scene is taken from Genesis (XXI, 9-21). Ishmael was Abraham's first son, born of Hagar, his wife Sarah's Egyptian servant. Sarah asked Abraham to expel the child and his mother. The patriarch exiled them to the desert of Beer-Sheba, where they were about to die of thirst when an angel appeared to point out a spring.
