Jean Chappe was born in Reims. His work is still little known. Until 1914, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims held two still lifes, one of which was signed and dated 1688 (see M. Fare, La nature morte au XVIIeme siecle, Fribourg, 1974, p. 356). Our painting can be compared with L'Epagneul aboyant (Canvas, same dimensions) signed and dated 169... and preserved in a private collection (see E. Coatalem, La nature morte française au XVIIe siècle, Dijon, 2014, reproduced on p. 144).
