Exceptional, important and fine tapestry in wool and silk. Drawn from several tapestries in the Pompey story: Consul Pompeus Strasbo hands over his sword to his son Pompey (aged just 17), the future great Roman general, better known as Pompey the Great (Cnaeus Pompelus Magus), who is about to join his father in a campaign in North Africa. He is handing over his own precious sword, with which he has won many battles, and the sobriety of the old man's colors clearly shows that the time has come for him to leave his place to his son, so that he can shine in the eyes of all, as his father did in his time. Pompey, in the center, is accompanied by his sister or future first wife Antistia (?), who presents him with his helmet. Beautiful, wide border with polychrome garlands of fruit and sprays of flowers, framed by a cherub. Flanders, Brussels. Second half of the 17th century. H_265 cm L_380 cm. Maintenance restorations. Good condition. Remarkable freshness of colors. Expert : Frank Kassapian
