THE ALAMO Three Sheet (41" x 81"); Roadshow Format Fine Folded; Artwork by Reynold Brown United Artists , 1960 This huge spectacle Western was released into theaters initially in the Todd-AO format. Todd-AO films were released in widescreen 70mm, and closely associated with what was called the roadshow exhibition. At the time, before multiplex theatres became common, most films opened at a sizeable single-screen theatre in the downtown area of each large city before eventually moving on to neighborhood theatres. The posters showing the Todd-AO logo were the first release of the more significant films, as with the Alamo. The center fold on the upper panel has some separation that has been supported by archival tape; otherwise, it is very clean. The Alamo is an American Western from 1960, directed by John Wayne. It stars Wayne, Richard Widmark, and Lawrence Harvey. The film reconstructs the real-life Battle of the Alamo in Texas in 1836. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won one for Best Sound. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th.
