Claudius Ptolemy was a Greek astronomer, mathematician and geographer of the 2nd century AD who lived in Alexandria where he carried out numerous works of scientific research. The Latin translation of his Geographia, completed in 1406 in Rome by Jacobus Angelus, was one of the most important events for the beginning of modern geography and cartography in Europe, making available to European studies the first treatise on cartography with a mathematical and astronomical basis.
