Gaius Plinius Caecilius Caecilius Secundus (Latin Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus); (Como, Italy, 61-Bitinia, c. 112), known as Pliny the Younger. Lawyer, writer and scientist of ancient Rome. Pliny's work Natural History consists of thirty-seven books. The first contains the general plan of the work and gives news about many writers read and studied. Books II-VII deal with geography, astronomy and anthropology. Books VIII-XI, zoology. Books XII-XIX, botany. Books XX-XXVII, plant medicine. Books XXVIII-XXXII, of animal medicine, that is, of everything that can be obtained as useful means from animals and plants. Books XXXIII-XXXVII, of mineralogy, and, in particular, of everything concerning the uses of human living and the plastic arts. A true encyclopedia, Pliny the Younger defined it as a vast and erudite work, as varied as nature. The material was obtained from the reading of about two thousand volumes, and about five hundred writers are cited, including Greeks and Latins.
