SIR JOHN ALFRED BROWN (Nottingham, 1866-Haddiscoe, Norfolk, 1955). "Navy, Gibraltar". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 40 x 50 cm; 57 x 67 cm (frame). In this panel Sir John Alfred Brown shows us a wide panoramic view in which the horizontal format does not detract from the depth of the space, which he lets breathe with a masterful work of parallel planes. The leisurely atmosphere gives the landscape a peaceful look. As usual in his work, Sir John Alfred Brown achieves here the impression of a window open to a calm, intense and moving horizon. A landscape painter, Johan Arnesby Brown specialized in impressionistic pastoral views, often with cattle. Brown himself studied at Bushey for four years from 1889 and at Nottingham School of Art in the late 1890s. After exhibiting at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1890 he became an elected associate there in 1903.
