EILER RASMUSSEN EILERSEN (Denmark, 1827-1912).
"View of Capri from a pergola", 1887.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 47 x 61 cm; 62 x 77 cm (frame).
The one we see here is a Mediterranean landscape of great evocative power made by Eilersen in one of his trips through Italy. The city of Capri acts as a backdrop in a composition defined by the marked diagonal of the terrace, which occupies most of the composition. The structure is covered by a pergola that allows some rays of light to pass through.
A landscape painter, Rasmussen Eilersen trained in Faaborg and Copenhagen. However, the outbreak of the First Schleswig War interrupted his plans when he was drafted into the army. He served for two years and then resumed his studies. In 1858 the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts awarded him a travel scholarship which enabled him to visit Paris, Italy, the Pyrenees and Switzerland. In 1871 he became a member of the Academy. He participated in numerous exhibitions abroad, including the Universal Exhibition (1889).
