OLE WANSCHER (1903-1985) for P. Jeppesen. A pair of solid oiled walnut Colonial Chairs, model PJ149. Loose seat frame with wicker, cushions upholstered in brown leather. Made at P. Jeppesen with metal plaques from here. Measurements: 85 x 65 x 65 cm. 43 cm. (seat height). Ole Wanscher studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under famous architect-designer Kaare Klint. During this period, Wanscher worked closely with Klint and, after Klint passed away, Wanscher overtook Klint's professorship at the academy. Wanscher had his own drawing studio from 1927 and from 1931-1936 he was a teacher at the School of Crafts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Wancher was influenced by Greek, Chinese and Egyptian art and in contrast to the modernists rejection of the past, he had references to the history, but in a more minimalistic and aesthetic way in his attempt to create contemporary furniture adapted to the needs of modern society. Wanscher went on to write various articles and published several books about design history, such as The History of the Arts of Furniture (1956) and Five Thousand Years of Furniture (1967). Ole Wanscher worked with many of the best cabinetmakers, among others France & Son, Rud. Rasmussen and Poul Jeppesen. Poul Jeppesen Furnituremakers was established in the 1950s. Wancher joined the company as a headdesigner, a position that did last for the rest of his professional life.
