François MARECHAL (b. 1945): Large sculpture in glazed stoneware and high-fired raku. Signed at bottom. H: 54 cm (dirty, tiny chips)
François Maréchal realizes his desire to work with clay with Jean Linard. He abandons his first trade to take classes with Jean Lerat. He turned stoneware and fired with wood, then specialized in gas-fired raku. This practice allows him more spontaneity and rapid experimentation. With his new wood-fired kiln, he returns to high temperatures and creates vases and sculptures that emphasize the interplay of materials, textures and reliefs. He designs his pieces, assembles them from slabs, engraves them, inlays them with sand and lightly engobes them. Between geometric rigor and organic sensuality, his works bear witness to accomplished aesthetic research.
