La Rochelle (La Tour de la Lanterne et la Tour de la Chaîne) Oil on canvas signed and located lower right 117 x 155 cm Condition report: Framed, restorations and missing parts French-Algerian painter, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, then in Paris, where he was a pupil of Benjamin Constant, Jules Bastien-Lepage and Jules Lefebvre. He exhibited at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he won an honorable mention, followed by a bronze medal in 1900. He was also awarded two gold medals at the Salon des artistes français. Appointed official painter to the navy in 1891, he founded the Société des peintres de marine. He is renowned for his strikingly realistic military and historical canvases. His depictions of maritime scenes echo his youth spent in Algeria. In 1894, he married Philomena Lynch, thus gaining access to the American market. Today, his works can be found in numerous museums in France and abroad. (MLD)
