ANVERSOISE school circa 1600, follower of Jan GOSSAERT dit MABUSE
Virgin and Child
Parquet panel
Height: 89 cm; Width: 68 cm
(old restorations and cracks)
This magnificent, tender composition unites the two figures around an elegant, sinuous drapery, with a landscape and a still life of cherries on either side. According to Carel van Mander, this model was created by Jan Gossaert de Mabuse in a painting now lost. Flemish artists, including Peter Coeck d'Alost and the Antwerp masters, produced several reproductions.
We'll note the search for movement in the woven folds, characteristic of early Mannerism, the precision of detail, the saturation of color and the quality of the loom, typical of Flemish painting.
