European school, 19th Century. Cupid with quiver. Dark and brown patinated bronze with silver and gilt details. Unsigned. Measurements: 36 x 20 x 11 cm. Cupid, the Roman god of love, is depicted with curly hair and with his quiver at his back. Beside him his bow rest on a three stump. Rectangular base with gilt-bronze border. In the classical mythology Cupid - the son of Venus, goddess of love, beauty and fertility, and Mars, god of war - was the Roman god of amorous desire, erotic love, attraction and reflection. Cupid is depicted with a bow and arrow or quiver wich represent his source of power. A person who is shot by Cupid's arrow will be filled with uncontrollable desire.
