KARLS, Untitled, Oil on canvas, 2023, 97 x 195 cm.
Karls is a painter born in 1971 in Honfleur (Normandy).
Initially a figurative artist, Karls soon realized that figuring implied for him a major obstacle to self-realization.
In LYRIC ABSTRACTION, he found the freedom of expression that suited him.
Baptized as such in 1947 by the painter Georges MATHIEU, this new pictorial language frees itself from any reference to the history of art, and is defined by a direct expression of the emotional impulse launched onto the canvas.
In his performances, Karls fuses "SHOW" and "DO". In this way, the public can experience and participate in the ineffable, intimate act of artistic creation.
Karls is a renowned performance artist and philanthropist. He is the author of over 30 performances and exhibitions in exceptional venues and the world's most beautiful cities: NEW YORK (Atlantic Gallery), PARIS (Sénat, la Madeleine, Palais d'lena, Secret Gal-lery; Club Haussmann). BRUGES (Galerie Deve), BEIRUT (Skybar).
To date, sales of his work for NGOs and foundations have resulted in over €70,000 in donations for good causes.
To date, Karls remains the only artist to create large-format works in public over short periods (45 to 90'). Performances can be commissioned by companies, NGOs or local authorities, in classic or monumental formats.
The most imposing of the works produced in partnership with the heritage mission at the Château de Carneville reaches impressive dimensions (1200 x 750 cm).
