Tunisia's beylical regime lasted from the 18th to the mid-20th century. The beys of the Husseinite dynasty, founded by Hussein Bey, were the country's official rulers. The end of the French protectorate (1881 - 1956) in Tunisia also marked the end of this ruling dynasty, which was ousted by a republican regime in 1957.
