Between 1658 and 1660, the people of Marseilles fought Louis XIV to maintain their autonomy against the king's
authority.
In 1660, Louis XIV sent 7,000 men to occupy and disarm the city. The town's consuls were dismissed,
institutions abolished and the city gates demolished.
On March 2, the king entered the city through the ramparts, as if entering a conquered city. The town councillors
presented him with two golden keys, which he refused. Louis XIV took municipal power away from the nobles and entrusted it to the
merchants and bourgeois. This coup de force was accompanied by major port and urban developments,
including the construction of forts at the entrance to the Old Port, with cannons facing the city rather than the sea.
