DAVOUT (Louis-Nicolas).
Autograph letter signed to his wife Aimée Leclerc. Dietrichswald [now Gietrzwałd in Poland, near Olsztyn], March 22 [1807]. 2 pp. in-4.
LETTER WRITTEN DURING THE POLISH CAMPAIGN, WHERE THE MARECHAL HAD JUST ILLUSTRAMED AT THE BATTLE OF EYLAU (February 7), at the head of the III Corps of the Grande Armée. His wife Aimée Leclerc was for a time the sister-in-law of Princess Pauline Bonaparte, who had married General Victor-Emmanuel Leclerc (d. 1802).
"For some time... I have received no news from you. There are no letters from you in Mr Maret's packets [Secretary of State Hugues-Bernard Maret], who always sends them to me exactly when there are any. They arrive quite promptly; your last one was dated March 1st and it's already been 6 days since I received it. As long as the cold continues, the couriers will not be delayed, but the thaw will cause a delay of 2 to 3 days...
It always earns me compliments from the Emperor, it makes me fit for war, and in fact I have never been in better health than since this campaign...
Tomorrow,... I will reply to Mr Ducancel, I gave His Majesty his work but the Emperor was too busy to be able to talk to him about it, he cannot be grateful to see the author devote his time and talents to such subjects... Your good and faithful sposo [husband, in Italian] LDavout".
