A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme, Muenier achieved his first success at the 1887 Salon, where he was awarded a grant that enabled him to discover Algeria in the company of his friend, the artist Dagnan-Bouveret. Together with Gustave Courtois, they formed an artistic confraternity, adopting the precepts of Bastien-Lepage's naturalist painting. Muenier devoted himself to rural life, but his travels also enabled him to paint luminous landscapes. This panel, with its soft, pearly turquoise colors, was painted on the Normandy coast in 1869.
