Enders) with rich ornamental R-gilt, gilt-stamped title and gilt edges (somewhat rubbed and scuffed, edges partly slightly discolored). One of 100 numbered copies of the special edition on van Gelder laid paper (GA 615). - Sarkwski 581 - Schauer II, 38 - Beautiful, bibliophile impression of the rare illustrations to Goethe's Faust, first published in 1822. When the 76-year-old Goethe saw Delacroix's drawings for his masterpiece, he wrote to his good friend Johann Peter Eckermann: "The more perfect imagination of such an artist forces us to think of the situations as well as he has gone through them himself. I must now confess that in certain scenes Mr. Delacroix has surpassed my own conception! - Printed with wide margins by the Spamersche Buchdruckerei, Leipzig, under the direction of Emil Rudolf Weiss. - Edges of endpapers somewhat browned, plate pages partly with faint browning from dustwrapper, bookplate on inside cover (Ludwig Em.
