J. A. Symonds, Havelock Ellis &
The contrary feeling of sex by Havelock Ellis and J. A. Symonds. Original German edition. Prepared with the assistance of Dr. Hans Kurella. Leipzig, Georg H. Wigands Verlag, 1896. XVI, 308 p. Cl.-8°. HLwd. d. Zt. with gilt stamped title (somewhat scuffed and rubbed).
Bibliothek für Socialwissenschaft, vol. VII. HVH 338 - First German edition. Published as volume 7 of the Bibliothek für Socialwissenschaft. A great rarity and probably the first work in England to speak out against the penalization of homosexuality or to assume that the "contrary sexual feeling" is innate, must not be defined as a disease and is thus close to the basic assumptions of the German sex researchers Carl Heinrich Ulrichs and Magnus Hirschfeld. - The five main chapters deal with: I. History of the doctrine of sexual inversion. - II. Homosexuality in Greece. - III. the contrary sexual feeling in men. - IV. Sexual inversion in women. - V. Theory of sexual inversion. - Only a few pale brown spots. Overall extremely well-preserved and clean copy.
Cont. half cloth binding with gilt title on spine (slightly rubbed a. scuffed). - First German edition, published before the English edition in 1900. A great rarity and probably the first work in England to speak out against the penalization of homosexuality and to assume that the "contrary sexual feeling" is innate, must not be defined as a disease and is thus close to the basic assumptions of the German researchers Carl Heinrich Ulrichs and Magnus Hirschfeld. - Only a few pp. with pale brown spots (mostly in the margins). Overall very well-preserved and clean copy.
