He settled in Hanover as a freelance artist and founded the artists' association "Die Abstrakten Hannover" in 1927, together with Kurt Schwitters and others. He was also a member of the Parisian group "Abstraction-Création". After 1945, Buchheister lived and worked in seclusion and from 1958 he spent half the year in France. His works are represented in international collections.
