Grand Prix de Rome in 1738, Potain worked alongside Ange-Jacques Gabriel in the Bâtiments du roi department. He was notably involved in the construction of Place Louis XV. A close associate of Marigny, he also worked at Ménars alongside Cochin and Soufflot. He was general controller of His Majesty's buildings in Fontainebleau and designed the church of Saint-Louis in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Potain also wrote a "Traité des ordres d'architecture" in 1767. François-Bruno also painted a portrait of his wife, Marie-Louise Le Saché, who also passed through the Cailleux gallery in the 1950s (59 x 48 cm). She is depicted in a full-length bust, with a rose in her hair. She is wearing a low-cut bodice, held in place by gray-blue epaulets, over which is a green satin scarf. Her left arm, holding flowers, rests on a yellow cushion1. 1 André Bancel, 'op. cit.', p. 321, FB 48.
