Entirely supervised by Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), this catalog was published to coincide with his exhibition at Galerie Drouin, May 3-June 1, 1946. Dubuffet's Archetypes was the first of a new series of paintings in which he mixed putty, sand, gravel, tar, varnish, plaster, coal, string and glass. From May 1945 to June 1, 1946, he produced a total of seventy-five figures.
