Since 1941, the Gnome Rhone company, well known before then for its 4-stroke flat-twins, has specialized in high-output 2-strokes. While the R, R1, R2 and R3 were just average in terms of power, with the R4 and its 6 hp, we're dealing with a highly efficient engine that encouraged many sports enthusiasts to pump it up for rallies, track races, the Bol d'Or...
In the summer of 1953, a new machine was introduced, the 175 cm3 type L53. The engine had nothing to do with the R3 R4 series, and this new bike was equipped with a superb 4-speed engine block. Another interesting detail is that the wheels on this model are fitted with 150 mm center-acting brakes. It's capable of a speed of 100 km/h, which the manufacturer gives as its base speed. The file includes an exchange between Mr. Mauret and the former owner, who tells him that the engine has been rebuilt with a new crankcase, new piston, new ignition...The bike regularly took part in various rallies.
We recommend that future purchasers carry out the usual restarts required when these machines are immobilized in the collector's museum.
