BRAZIL - "View of St SALVADOR, a City of South America", engraved for MILLAR'S New complete & universal System of Geography. c.1782. Etching and burin engraving by SHERWIN John Keyse (1751 - 1790). laid paper. Margins. This engraving shows a view of Salvador originally published in George Millar's "The New and Universal System of Geography: Being a Complete History and Description of the Whole World". This work aimed to provide the reader with a particular, complete, accurate, circumstantial and entertaining account of everything from the geographical features of countries to their histories, descriptions of flora and fauna and local customs. Salvador was founded as Brazil's capital in 1549 by Tomé de Sousa, the first Governor General. It was a center of the sugar and slave trades and continues to be known for its distinctive Afro-Brazilian culture. Millar calls it "a populous, magnificent city, and the gayest and most opulent in all Brazil". 22.5 x 33 cm. Condition A (generally good).
